The New Zealand retreat was wonderful! I cooked and ate clean, NZ produce, drank and washed in sweet rainwater, chopped kindling and built a fire for my heating each day and I managed to slow my brain right down and get lots of writing done. The Northland winter was astonishing, equally cool, sunny, blue sky days and wild, wind-whipped stormy days which made one think in sympathetic wonder about Tasman and Cook and the men who lived through that weather out on the seas to find the place.

I was highly inspired by both the isolation and the scenery. The fiction writing mood continues, however, so the blog writing feels a little like time taken away from it – hence the tardiness and brevity of this post.

This slideshow is mostly of photos I took from my little house – you will see why I felt no need to leave and why the creative juices flowed!

In fact, this post was a little longer but I was writing it on the WordPress dashboard – which looks better than it did in 2.7 but seemingly still fails as a writing tool because when I pressed ‘publish’ it published it’s own autosave from fifteen minutes previous. I’ve written this in Live Writer which developed issues with images with WP 2.7 but frankly I’d rather have to manually insert an image than lose fifteen minutes of writing. Grrr wordpress – welcome back to technology, me

I have discovered that NOT TURNING ON THE COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD AT ALL during the day helps me to write!! Huge discovery I know lol but there it is.
Of course this doesn’t mean the computer doesn’t go on to check mail and then play Warcraft – all hail Burning Crusade! – after Superman gets home but part of the ‘keeping the marriage working” thing is the “do not write while he is home” cause, lets face it, I’m NOT HERE when I’m writing LOL.

Chapter One of Shadowkeeper is as done as it’s going to be before I move on to Chapter Two and I’m pretty happy with it. The beginning and the end will change before the draft is finished but the beginning in that way that beginnings are never quite finished till the whole thing is finished and the end because the whole chapter thing is not natural for me and I suspect the first scene of what is currently Chapter Two may need to be the last of Chapter One – OR actually the beginning LOL. Swapping openings and conclusions was something I discovered at Uni – invariably (to the point that it became a formula for me) I found that I had a natural tendency to outline what I was going to say at the top in a little too much detail for an introduction and then precis my points wonderfully succinctly at the end (mostly because, having written then damn thing, I was then clearer on what my points were) so my leave-it-to-the-last-minute strategy became: write it from top to bottom; swap top with bottom; race for bus to the Ming Wing The only essays I got less than a Distinction on were the ones where I panicked and lost my self trust and didn’t do this.

Anyway Chapter Two is underway and I very well may not be back till it is done. Unless I block…

Ah… 2007 feels better already – some challenges already but optimism all the way… So, 2nd jan and second post since restart – not bad at all. After reading the last post Superman (I married into the Justice League don’cha know) was all support and cheering but asked “What are you going to write, then?” Hehe I missed that, huh? Well the plan for this year is thus: Novelise The Shadowkeeper and at least outline the next in the series (which will deal with Brigid holding on to her belief in and ability to travel to the Shadow-lands and helping others with their own journeys therein.)
Why novelise? Well… various producers, agents, editors in Hollywood suggested “having a book published is a great way to attract attention for  script” The tone in which these words are spoken always suggests that this would be a simple matter – much simpler than getting a movie greenlit. Now having had some experience in the publishing industry my reaction to this casual line was and still is – ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!  These people clearly have no idea that it is just as hard to get published as it is to get produced – sure a film costs a lot more to make than publishing a novel – but it’s still just as difficult to be read, get an agent blah blah… What’s more, not every story should be a novel, nor should every story be a film or a comic or whatever… some stories are only appropriate for certain media. HOWEVER Shadowkeeper could translate well as both novel and illustrated story book – both of which I would like to do and as an illustrated book can be based on a novel but mostly because a novel is something I can produce without requiring an artist, the novel is where I will begin (there’s a big kids theatre spectacular in it as well, I believe, but that can wait    )  I have had a couple of false starts at the novelisation but I now admit to myself that I was really trying to find a way to just reformat then edit the screenplay into the novel in exactly the way I lament people think you can just reformat a novel into a screenplay – not because I disrespect the medium in any way but, frankly I was over the story – I’d had enough. Now, with a little distance and a realisation that there are more stories to tell of this world, I’m ready to dive into it again.
Et voila – I have committed myself! LOL

Well, I promised I’d be honest and report the bad as well as the good so the last few days definitely deserve an entry. Today (being Tuesday) I received the next Nicholl letter and The Shadowkeeper did not make it through to the semifinal round. On Saturday I received word that of the 200+ companies who requested the ScriptPIMP finalists log-lines 37 companies had requested the script – all 37 passed. The strange thing is that, when I look down the list of 37 companies, only a few of them do family films and none of those fantasy or animated ones – add to that that my logline came up in a search on inktip done by a porn production company and I’m starting to think there is a problem with my logline – people are clearly thinking it’s going to be something other than it is… Anyway, it is still with several other companies who do do family and/or animation films and with the Australian Producer who took a concept of mine to Cannes several years ago so there are still plenty of other irons in the fire. Not to mention the Academy’s little ray of hope at the end of their letter: “If past experience means anything, several quarterfinalists will option or sell a script in near future.” Hmm… if Shadowkeeper can be one of 300 in 6,000 can it be one of several in 300? What’s more important is that I have finally found the extra element I needed for the screenplay I’m currently working on – it kind of takes it out of the range of the Australian budget of 1.5m, for which the idea was originally developed, but that’s just not me, anyway. Afterall, if this spec-writer part of my screenwriting career is going to go on and on, I may as well enjoy what I’m writing and this is FUN!!

Home and just about human again (that 15 hour haul over the pacific is INSANE) I am appreciating the simple joy of not having to get dressed and face the world just to get some breakfast, though, for that, I can heartily recommend a lovely little psuedo-french cafe called “Champagne” on Santa Monica near San Vicente. And of course I must not forget the travelling Melbourner’s traditional returning cry of “Sooo good to have decent coffee again!” Though, again, I can report that genuinely good coffee with well-frothed milk (which is as much of a problem as finding decent beans) can be found on Little Santa Monica a few doors down from Rodeo at the “Euro Cafe” (where they also have RAI on the television which added to the whole Homesickness remedy for this Melbourner who lives between Lygon Street and Sydney Road!)

The number one question I am being asked, by those I love well enough to be willing to be seen in a half-human state, is “So, was it worth it?” The answer is a resounding YES! I can understand why they are asking – I haven’t been able to return, beaming from ear to ear, and say “Pete Jackson’s directing The Shadowkeeper!” or some such cry which smacks of obvious success, and it seems some people were genuinely thinking that was possible – but, as I tried to make it clear before I left – I was not expecting that.
What I was hoping for was to achieve what is the first MAJOR hurdle for any aspiring screenwriter in Hollywood TO BE READ AT ALL. An estimate of 50-70,000 scripts are sent to Hollywood each year so everyone is looking for the slightest reason not to have to read another script so you can imagine how many good scripts will end up in slush piles. SO, that was my goal – and it was (and is being) achieved. Shadowkeeper is still being read (or waiting in the ‘recommended’ piles) at various high profile companies and I have had requests for my next scripts (both pitches I took with me hit a mark) on the strength of my writing style. Sure, this is all still on a spec basis but just having the doors open is a HUGE step of which I am very proud.

I have had some great feedback from people who read it while I was there and who had read it before I arrived (competiton judges and the like) my favourite of which was that it is reminiscent of the work of Miyazaki Hayao – at first I thought someone must have told this guy that Miyazaki was one of my heroes but he named a couple of his films (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle) in case I didn’t know who he was so I accepted the compliment and beamed from ear to ear! Unfortunately the comparison was followed by a comment that he feared that it is “over the head of we silly Americans” and that their company couldn’t produce it – I considered offering to dumb it down but wasn’t quite sure how to put that – or how I would do it – it’s just a plain ol’ quest narrative, for goodness sake LOL!

The most important thing I have returned with is a lot more confidence in my potential as a writer and my ability to handle the Hollywood ‘thang’ if that is where my stories will take me. In fact, I found LA as a city completely un-frightening and really quite friendly (except for the occasional communication problem which was, essentially, funny and the whole, uncomfortably sad servant-class thing which really wasn’t funny at all but I won’t go into that here) so, should I need to go back on overwhelmingly exciting business I will be on solid ground!

So, what’s next? Well – writing the scripts people are waiting for while I wait upon the other readings of The Shadowkeeper. I’ve also decided to really put some work into seeing if maybe there might be someone interested in producing it from here because this is where I want to be based in the long term (at the very least I don’t want to have spend any Summers in LA – too hot for too many days in a row!) I will also, at some point, write reviews of the three books I bought in LA (there were sooo many other I could have bought given unlimited funds): “Breakfast with Sharks”; “The Script is Finished, Now What Do I Do?” and; “Writing Treatments the Sell” – the latter has the distinction of being the first source I’ve found which actually outlines exactly what is expected in a Bible for a TV show . Oh, yes – and find a job, any job, because boy do I need money now!!!

Well, what a week! The Shadowkeeper was not a winner on the big night, prize-wise (small pout) but, by the end of the night, I had one definite lunch for this week, two requests for the script and tentative lunches (to be confirmed after they’d read the script) which is, after all the main point. It’s not a bad start considering that most of the industry folk dashed out the door pretty quickly this year, taking request forms to be sent to Script Pimp Friday and Monday, instead of facing the wide-eyed scribes congregating round the bar! It was a great night (though the comedy unfortunately left much to be desired) and it was so good to experience that very rare thing for writers: professional camaraderie (we are a lonely lot!) Friday and Saturday were spent interspersing sight-seeing with the hunt for printing and faxing capabilities to get release forms to the right people. We have done a few “Hollywood” things: We spent a magical, balmy night at the Hollywood Bowl picnicking as Etta James sang after which we walked halfway home and wandered down Hollywood Bvde, past the Kodak and Mann’s Theatres (I highly recommend doing this at quarter to midnight, when the crowds are gone;) and we’ve strolled Rodeo Drive, though we arrived late in the day and were distracted in an antique jewelry store in Beverley for over an hour which curtailed our time and so, unfortunately, we will have to return to walk the other side of the street. Not very Hollywood but spectacular nevertheless was the Tutankhamun exhibition. To stand in the same room with artifacts I have studied since I was a child was quite breathtaking, particularly the two Akhenaten pieces – I spent a long time with them. The main joy was that they were mounted in such a way that one could walk right around each artifact and see them from side and rear angles which are rarely presented in books. My very favourite discovery was on a statue of Tuthmose and his mother Tiaa sitting with their middle arms disappearing around each other. I had seen the front view so many times in print and, not only was it much smaller than I imagined but, when walking around it, you can see that the scupltor has carved their hands reaching round and resting on the back of the shoulder of each figure. Tuthmose’s fingers are long and strong and reach almost right round his mother’s shoulder but Tiaa’s hand is small and slim and barely reaches the back of her son’s arm. Jenny and I have explored West Hollywood, where we are based, and I’m starting to feel almost at home on Santa Monica Boulevard – especially now we are in a friend’s apartment instead of the hotel (of course that could just be the full range of communications at hand. I now have to admit that I am an accessibility addict – I hated not having the net on tap.) The architecture, of homes and buildings alike, is striking here. The sheer variety, creativity and unashamed romanticism is a contrast to Australia that I didn’t expect. No one merely copying the next door neighbours, nor fretting over an extra corner here and there because of the cost – design seems to rule here, even in the smallest, humblest of buildings. Still, that doesn’t stop me being homesick already! Most surprisingly of all, we have discovered that LA does, indeed, have a fantastic public transport system! Buses criss-crossing the city from the Hollywood Bowl to Venice Beach to Downtown to Westwood which, for $3 a day, you can jump on and off until 3a.m. though it does highlight the racial divide here, which is shockingly accute. Well that’s my ramble for today. We are starting the pavement pounding work in earnest this week, so keep your fingers crossed for us…

The next few times I write will be from Hollywood which is actually several thousand miles from where I started from (Philly) but it’s the same country … Okay, so I’m a little dizzy with excitement but who wouldn’t be?!
I intend to make the most I can possibly make of this opportunity and I hope my posts will be filled with news of many meetings and goings on (names will be edited out, of course.) I have decided that my main goal will be to gain representation – fairly important when one is living a quarter of the way around the world! I have a couple of meetings already organised: at the Braille Library facilities in Hollywood (for obvious reasons) and an executive producer of a very successful television show has very kindly given me her number to contact her for a chat when I get in (she is the daughter of a friend of my mothers – I’m getting the hang of it already!)

Of course we intend to do some touristy things as well. We have tickets to the Tutankhamun exhibition – something that is not expected to tour downunder so it’s magical that we have the chance. Apparently there are artifacts from the whole 18th Dynasty on display and I am crossing my fingers for something, anything, from Tut’s (assumed) father’s reign – Akhenaten will forever be my favourite (he was my first celebrity crush – strange child that I was!) We will also be taking a weekend to explore the central coast – my mother will be taking us to to Cambria and Big Sur (which I hear is a big forest but I’m not allowed to google it and take the edge of the impact it apparently has) and to a Scandinavian town called Solvang. And, of course, we’re going to explore the Academy Gallery and Library and check out theatre in the area.

So. This is it.

“Come to the edge,” He said. They said, “We are afraid.”
“Come to the edge,” He said.
They came.
He pushed them… and they flew.”
- Guillaume Apollinaire

Cross your fingers for me – I’m jumping.

Well, the PAGE semis were announced today and The Shadowkeeper hasn’t made it through to the Semi final round. I’m quite disappointed as I was really hoping to get to this round because it sounds as though they will be judged by the very people one needs to have read one’s script but them’s the breaks – just not one of the top 25 Sci-fi or Fantasy scripts, it seems.

Of course, the Script Pimp awards show at the Hollywood Improv is less than a fortnight away and I’m starting to get thrilling flutterings about the trip. My dear friend, and fabulous actress with whom I have worked on countless audio books, will be coming with me to LA and together we will hype each other’s worth to whomever will listen (so much easier than hyping oneself!) My mother, who lives in SoCal, has nabbed some tickets to the awards show with some friends so, as we haven’t seen each other for about 11 years, the night at the Improv will be quite an experience! Whatever the result of the competition, I am ready to network, network, network – which I’m usually pretty good at – though I’ve never done it on my own behalf, before. Basically, I’m just looking to enjoy meeting some new people and sharing my passion for writing and the Celtic culture which has inspired this screenplay.

Time to get organised, better make some lists…

The Shadowkeeper has been selected as a Quarter Finalist in the PAGE International Screenwriting Competition! The Semi-Finalists will be announced on July 15th. The PAGE is judged on a strict points basis: points from 1-10 are awarded in several catagories from formatting and typos to structure and marketability. There is a Bronze, Silver and Gold award given in each of six genres and a Grand Prize for best over-all script. Getting into the Semis would be fantastic because the Semi-Final round will be judged by actual agents and development directors – which is the definition of exposure! Watch this space!

Well, I received my notes for draft 6 of The Shadowkeeper and it was given a RECOMMEND!!!
So the chase for representation and a producer is on!
What does the Recommend mean? Well, it means I can now query the companies who will accept only “ScriptPIMP Recommends” scripts (the big producers and agents)- the script will also be lodged on Ink-tip (another place the industry looks for scripts) in the ScriptPIMP Recommends section.
The notes outlined some polishing suggestions for the script itself: tweaking formatting, the odd description (like removing the word ‘kitten’ I reference to a baby hare which I will do because it’s obviously not common knowledge that it is the correct term.)
So – next steps: make changes and put in the queries to the big companies in time for Friday’s scriptPIMP email.
Thanks for all your emails of support let’s hope we can have that sale party some time this year!
